We often receive requests to remove content from our website, and some even include threats to sue RateMyStation for defamation. To date, no one has actually followed through with filing a lawsuit against us for our ratings.

The law protects RateMyStation from legal responsibility for any content submitted by our users, including the ratings and comments that appear on our website. The Communications Decency Act of 1996 (47 U.S.C. Sec. 230) provides federal immunity to online platforms, such as RateMyStation, from civil liability, based on 3rd-party content provided by our users, and from editing or removing content in certain circumstances.

This law is clear and simple. Anyone who still wants to sue our company, for ratings posted by our users, will risk penalties imposed by the court. Penalties may include financial sanctions and reimbursements of our attorney’s fees, if we have to defend ourselves against a lawsuit that ignores clear and obvious legal protections for RateMyStation.
